瑪莎 葛蘭姆 (1894–1991) 是美國的舞蹈家、編舞家、現代舞蹈史上最早的創始人之一。她對舞蹈的彭響力有如現代視覺藝術上的畢加索，現代音樂的傳奇人物俄國作曲家斯特拉溫斯基，及20世紀上半葉最有影響的建築師之一的法蘭克 洛伊 萊特。
瑪莎 葛蘭姆的豐功偉績，可藉為紀念她百年誕辰所拍的「向瑪莎葛蘭姆致敬」的短片來一窺堂奧，它是由影星葛雷哥萊 畢克（Gregory Peck，1916－2003）作旁白的。

密爾 (1881-1959) 是她的叔叔。
她曾為百老匯的一些著名的歌舞劇編舞，包括 Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945), Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951) 等，這些舞台劇後來都被好萊塢改編拍攝成風靡一時的音樂歌舞片。
自從她三十八歲時為 Oklahoma! 編舞後，才在舞蹈界嶄露頭角。這齣原始的舞臺劇在百老匯連續演了五年共2,243場才下檔。
據艾格妮絲在她的著述中說，當 Oklahoma! 在1943年3月31日首演之後，她驀然發覺，多年來自己引以為傲的精心之作，從來無人喝采，只不過差強人意的 Oklahoma!，反而叫好又叫座，使她倍感困惑，擔心自己是不是喪失了價值觀的判斷與衡量的能力。
她求教於瑪莎，對當時的場景及內容記憶猶新 － 那是在 Schrafft's 飯店內，點用的是汽水。她說自己一直憂心如焚，雖一心一意想邁向巔峰，卻不相信自己真的有這個本事。
瑪莎於是以十分平靜的口吻，告訴了她下面這麼一段話，也就是史翠普所朗誦的：
There is a vitality, a life force, an
energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because
there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you
block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The
world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor
how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to
keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even
have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and
aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. ... No artist is
pleased. [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer
divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us
more alive than the others.
